Frank Mir’s Not Having a Good Month

Brock Lesnar not only beat you at UFC 100, he obliterated your face. No amount of makeup could completely cover up the raccoon eyes you still sport. Then you go out on that limb and pick Forrest Griffin as “the guy” to beat Anderson Silva. Silva embarrasses Griffin harder than Lesnar did you. How could your life possibly get worse?

Your favorite fighter, the guy who’s knob you slobbed for five rounds against Taka Michinoku, the guy you proclaimed as the “best American-born mixed martial artist” gets a nice hard look at Brian Bowles’ knuckles. When Todd Harris asks you to recap the action, you sound like someone just killed your puppy just to bring it back to life and kill it again.

I really don’t have a problem with commentators not maintaining objectivity in general. The problem I have is when the commentary is provided by the organization. Mir and Harris aren’t just representatives of Versus, they’re representatives of the WEC (I believe). When you’re being paid by the promotion, it becomes inappropriate to openly take sides. But hey, it provided for some hilariously awkward TV!

Edit: I also love Harris blowing his load during the replay while Mir’s doing his eulogy. Classy!

When Good Commentators Go Bad

I love Frank Mir the Commentator. In my opinion, he’s the best English-speaking, regular MMA broadcaster right now. However, he turned in an absolutely brutal performance during the Torres-Mizugaki main event. If you had no clue how to judge a fight, you would have scored the fight 50-45 based on Mir’s explanation of the action.

Even in a first round that universally (from my small sample of Sherdog play-by-play and Bloody Elbow livechat) went to the Japanese import, Mir waxed poetic about Torres throughout the period. As much as I love Mir as a commentator, I love Torres that much more as a fighter. And while the round was close and I could defend a 10-10, it was fairly clear the round went to Mizugaki.

Joe Rogan favors guys when he calls UFC fights, but you have to be a pretty experienced watcher to know when he’s pulling for one side or the other. In simpler terms, he’s much more subtle about his biases. Mir might as well have worn his Miguel Torres’ mullet for this one.
